Working Hours

Employees can work up to 8 hours a day, or a maximum of 48 hours per week.

Minimum Wage

EGP 2,400 per month for local workers. USD 1,500 per month for expat workers.

Bonuses

There are no statutory bonus schemes in Egypt.

Employment contracts in Egypt must be written in Arabic and issued to the employer, employee, and Social Insurance Office.

All contracts should certain specific information as set out in the Labour Law.

Both indefinite and fixed-term contracts are permitted in Egypt.

Annual Leave

Minimum of 15 days' paid holiday after one year of service, rising to one month's holiday after ten years.

Sick Leave

Up to 180 days’ sick leave paid at 75-100% of the worker’s salary, depending on length of absence.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: at least three months' paid leave.
• Paternity leave: none.

Termination Process

Employers in Egypt can terminate a contract provided they give notice and compensation in line with legal requirements. Unfair dismissal may lead to compensation claims.

Grounds for termination include:

• Fraud
• Serious material damage to the employer
• Failure to observe safety regulations
• Unacceptable absence
• Assault
• Breach of contract or competition clause

Severance Pay

Employees are entitled to one month’s severance pay per year of service up to five years, then 1.5 months’ for each year of employment thereafter.
