Working Hours

Employees can work up to eight hours a day, or 40 hours per week.

Minimum Wage

USD 6.00 per hour.

Bonuses

Employees in the British Virgin Islands are entitled to a 13th month salary. Employers must pay an additional month's salary at year-end.

Employment contracts in the British Virgin Islands can be written, oral, or implied. However, the employer must issue a written statement when the contract exceeds four months.

The statement must include:

• Employer and employee names and addresses
• Job title and responsibilities
• Working hours
• Salary and leave entitlement
• Contract length (if applicable)

Both indefinite and fixed-term contracts are permitted.

Annual Leave

Between 12 and 20 days' paid holiday per year, depending on the employee's length of service.

Sick Leave

Up to 12 days' paid sick leave after four months of service. A medical certificate must be provided.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: at least 13 weeks' paid leave, provided the employee has at least 12 months of service.
• Paternity leave: one month's unpaid leave.

Termination Process

Employers in the British Virgin Islands can terminate a contract provided they give notice in line with legal requirements.

No notice is required if the employee is dismissed on the grounds of misconduct. Other rules may apply for collective dismissals, or if the employee is a member of a trade union.

Severance Pay

Severance pay is usually equal to one week’s wages for each year of service.
