Working Hours

Employees can work up to 60 hours a week, though the limit may vary depending on the sector.

Bonuses

Employees in Cameroon are entitled to a 13th month salary, payable at the year-end.

Employment contracts can be written or oral. Indefinite and fixed-term contracts are permitted, but fixed-term contracts must be in writing.

All contracts should include:

• Job description
• Employee responsibilities
• Work location
• Provision of accommodation (if applicable)
• Salary
• Health and safety procedures

Foreign worker contracts must be endorsed by the Minister in charge of Labour.

Annual Leave

Minimum of 1.5 days per month, or 2.5 days for under 18s. Annual leave is accrued after one year of service.

Sick Leave

There is no statutory sick leave in Cameroon, but there is some implicit provision for duly certified absence due to illness.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: 14 weeks' fully paid leave, paid from the National Social Insurance Fund.
• Paternity leave: none.

Termination Process

Employers and employees in Cameroon can terminate a contract provided they give notice in line with legal requirements.

Other grounds for termination include:

• Mutual consent
• Misconduct (including negligence and insubordination)
• Unjustified absences
• Lack of employee competence.

Severance Pay

Severance pay is equivalent to a percentage of the average monthly wage of the 12 months prior to dismissal. The percentage ranges from 20% to 40%, depending on length of service.
