Working Hours

Employees can work up to nine hours a day, or 45 hours per week, plus overtime.

Minimum Wage

TSH 120,000 to 500,000 per month, depending on the sector.

Bonuses

There are no statutory bonus schemes in Tanzania.

Employment contracts in Tanzania can be written or oral, though a written Statement of Particulars is always required.

The statement should include:

• Employee name, age, address, and sex
• Place of recruitment
• Job title and responsibilities
• Start date
• Workplace
• Working hours
• Salary and benefits
• Contract type and length (if applicable)

Indefinite, fixed-term, and task-based contracts are permitted.

Annual Leave

Up to 28 days' paid holiday per year, including public holidays and weekly rest periods. This applies after the first year of service.

Sick Leave

Employees in Tanzania are entitled to up to 63 days' paid sick leave within a 36 month period, plus an additional 36 days' unpaid leave.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: at least 84 days' paid leave after six months of service.
• Paternity leave: three days' paid leave after six months of service.

Termination Process

Employers in Tanzania can terminate a contract provided they give notice and/or compensation in line with legal requirements.

Other grounds for termination include:

• Misconduct
• Incapacity
• Incompatibility
• Retrenchment

Employees can also end a contract by giving notice. If they fail to give notice, the employer is entitled to make deductions from their final wage.

Severance Pay

Employees are entitled to seven days’ wages per year of service, up to a maximum of ten years.
