Bonuses

There are no statutory bonus schemes in Uganda.

Employment contracts in Uganda should be written and issued to the employee within 12 weeks of their start date. They should include:

• Employer and employee names and addresses
• Job title and responsibilities
• Workplace
• Working hours
• Salary, overtime rate, and leave entitlement
• Start date
• Notice period

Both indefinite and fixed-term contracts are permitted in Uganda.

Annual Leave

Minimum of 21 days' paid holiday per year after six months of service.

Sick Leave

One month's paid sick leave, plus a further month of unpaid leave. A medical certificate must be provided.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: at least 60 days' paid leave.
• Paternity leave: four days' paid leave.

Termination Process

Both employers and employees in Uganda can terminate a contract provided they give notice in line with legal requirements.

If the employer dismisses an employee for misconduct, they must explain the reasons to them. Employees have the right to appeal against unfair dismissal.

Severance Pay

Severance pay in Uganda is subject to negotiation between the employer and the employee, or the trade union that represents them.
