Working Hours

The typical working week in Oman runs from Sunday through Thursday. Standard working hours are eight (8) hours per day, and maximum of forty (40) hours per week.

During Ramadan, the work hours are reduced to six (6) hours per day, and maximum of thirty (30) hours per week for Muslim employees.

Minimum Wage

OMR 325 per month.

Bonuses

There are no statutory bonus schemes in Oman.

Employment contracts in Oman should be written in Arabic, though bilingual or additional English language documents are also common.

Foreign employees must sign a government employment contract to obtain their work permit and residence visa. This contract is in English and Arabic.

According to the Labour Law 2023, the employment contract must include the following particulars:

• Name of the employer, establishment and address of the workplace
• Name of the employee, date of birth, qualification, occupation, place of residence, and nationality.
• The type of work, its conditions, and the contract period if is for a definite period.
• The basic pay and any allowances, stipends, benefits, or gratuities to which the employee is entitled to.
• The notice period to be given by either party, provided the notice period given by the employer to the employee must not be less than a month.
• Provisions adhering to the respect of religions, religious beliefs, and the laws of the Sultanate of Oman and its customs and traditions.

Fixed-term contracts: Must not exceed five (5) years. If the contract is renewed, the new period is considered an extension of the original time period and added to the calculation of the total period of the employee’s service. If the contract exceeds five (5) years, it is automatically considered as a contract for an indefinite duration.

Annual Leave

Minimum of 30 days' paid holiday per year, after six months of service.

Sick Leave

Employees are entitled to 182 days of sick leave per year. The employee is paid, by the employer, according to the following rates:

Parental Leave

Maternity leave:

Female employees are entitled to 98 days of paid maternity leave. The leave can begin, for a period not exceeding, 14 days before childbirth. The maternity leave is paid by the employer, and the Social Protection Fund refunds employer.

Upon resumption to work, the female employees are entitled to 1 hour per day of nursing break for a period of one year from the end of maternity leave.

Paternity leave: 

Male employees are entitled to seven (7) days of paid paternity leave, and the leave must be taken within 98 days of the child’s birth. The leave is paid by the employer, and the Social Protection Fund refunds the employer.

Childcare leave:

A female employee can be granted unpaid leave to care for her child for a period not exceeding one (1) year. The leave is taken after childbirth.

Termination Process

Employers and employees in Oman can terminate a contract, provided they give at least 30 days’ notice, in line with legal requirements.

Employers can dismiss an employee without notice in certain circumstances, including:

• Fraud
• Mistakes that lead to grave material loss for the employer
• Lack of safety considerations
• Unexplained absences
• Disclosure of business secrets
• Intoxication at work
• Breach of contract

Severance Pay

Upon the termination of employment contract for employees not covered by the Social Protection Law, employers are required to pay a post-service gratuity to the employee. The gratuity is equivalent to one month of basic salary for each year of service.
