Annual Leave
The statutory minimum is 22 workdays (a maximum of 20 days in the first year of employment, with the employee acquiring 2 days per complete month).
Sick Leave
Portuguese social security pays after the 3rd day of illness. Employees can receive sick pay for up to 1,095 days. Pay is generally 55% to 75% of the employee’s salary.
Parental Leave
In Portugal, after the birth or adoption of a child, the mother and father are both entitled to parental leave, which encompasses both maternity and paternity leave. There are two types of parental leave: initial and extended parental leave.
Initial parental leave: Lasts for 120 or 150 days, including compulsory maternity and paternity leave. Female employees must take 42 days of compulsory maternity leave, while male employees are required to take 28 days of compulsory paternity leave—7 days immediately after the child's birth and the remaining 21 days within 42 days.
Extended parental leave: Can be extended for up to three months for both parents, taken immediately after the initial leave.
Leave for pregnancy loss: In cases of miscarriage, both the female and male employees are entitled to three (3) days of leave. Payment is on the employer.
Grandchild care leave: In support of young parents, when one of the parents is under 16 years old, working grandparents living with the baby are entitled to 30 consecutive days of leave after the birth. This leave may be shared between the grandparents. Social security pays remuneration at 100%.
