Working Hours

Employees can work up to 40 hours per week. This may be calculated as an average over a four-week period.

Minimum Wage

There is no statutory minimum wage in Sweden. Wages are usually negotiated in a collective bargaining agreement.

Bonuses

There are no statutory bonus schemes in Sweden.

Employment contracts in Sweden must be written. They should include:

• Employee and employer details
• Job title and responsibilities
• Recruitment form
• Working hours
• Salary, benefits, and leave entitlement
• Notice period
• Details of collective agreement (if applicable)

Both indefinite and fixed-term contracts are permitted in Sweden.

Annual Leave

Minimum of 25 days' paid holiday per year.

Sick Leave

Employees in Sweden are entitled to up to 14 days of sick leave paid at 80% of their standard wage.

For longer term illnesses, the employee can claim sickness benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: at least 14 weeks' leave paid at 77.5% of the mother's standard wage.
• Paternity leave: none.
• Parental leave: 480 days, which can be shared between the child's parents as they choose.

Termination Process

Employers in Sweden can terminate a contract provided they give notice and/or compensation in line with legal requirements.

It may be possible to dismiss an employee as a result of:

• Redundancy
• Repeated negligence
• Poor performance
• Cooperation difficulties
• Serious neglect of duty

Employees can also end a contract by giving one month's notice.

Severance Pay

There is no statutory severance pay requirement in Sweden. However, a financial settlement is usually required for redundancies and termination without just cause.
