Working Hours

In Saint Kitts and Nevis, normal working hours are eight hours per day and 40 hours each week.

Any work over 40 hours per week is considered overtime and should be compensated at time and a half. Work on Sundays, rest days, and public holidays should have twice the compensation rate.

Minimum Wage

In St. Kitts & Nevis, the minimum wage rate is EC$9.00 per hour.

Bonuses

Most employers provide a December bonus.

Contracts in Saint Kitts and Nevis can be either fixed or indefinite.

Contracts must include:

• Employer name and address
• Local business location name and address
• Employee name and address
• Employment commencement date
• Description of the employee’s position
• Outline of employee’s duties and responsibilities
• Duration of the probationary period
• Work hours
• Wage rate and time intervals for payment
• Overtime pay rates
• Length of notice required for either party to terminate the employment contract
• Leave entitlement

Annual Leave

Employees are entitled to 14 days of paid leave for each year of service, in addition to Sundays and holiday leave.

Sick Leave

In St. Kitts & Nevis, the social security system covers payments for sick leave of up to 26 weeks.

If the employee is insured and submits a claim within 10 days of a doctor’s examination, they will receive 65% of their regular wages for the full sickness absence.

Parental Leave

St. Kitts & Nevis offers 13 weeks of maternity leave with pay. The social security system will cover 65% of the employee’s average weekly wages.

Termination Process

Employment in St. Kitts and Nevis may be terminated without notice during the probationary period. In other instances, the amount of notice depends on the length of service.

Severance Pay

Severance pay is calculated on the following basis:

• Two weeks per year for the first five years of employment
• Three weeks for five to ten years of employment
• Four weeks for upwards of ten years.

There is a maximum payment of no more than 52 weeks' pay.
