Working Hours

Employees can work up to eight hours a day, or 40 hours per week.

Minimum Wage

Effective 1^st January 2024, the minimum wage is set at TTD 20.50 per hour.

Bonuses

There are no statutory bonus schemes in Trinidad and Tobago, though it is common for employers to pay a 13th month salary.

An employment contract in Trinidad and Tobago may be oral or written, express or implied. They should include:

• Employee and employer names
• Job title
• Start date
• Working hours
• Salary and leave entitlement
• Contract length (if applicable)
• Notice period
• Disciplinary rules and procedures
• Arrangements for handling employee grievances
• Termination of contract terms

Both indefinite and fixed-term contracts are permitted.

Annual Leave

Minimum of ten days' paid holiday after one year of service.

Sick Leave

Up to 14 days' sick leave per year after six months of service. A medical certificate must be provided to receive paid sick leave.

Parental Leave

• Maternity leave: Female employees are entitled to 14 weeks of paid maternity leave, provided they have worked for the employer for 12 months. The employee may commence the leave six (6) weeks prior to the expected date of delivery.
• Paternity leave: none.

Termination Process

There is no general legislation governing termination of contracts in Trinidad and Tobago. Common law applies in the absence of termination provisions in a collective agreement.

However, in general, employers are considered to be in breach of contract if they terminate a contract and fail to:

• Give adequate notice or compensation
• Follow contractual procedure
• Justify summary dismissal

Constructive dismissal is also not permitted.

Severance Pay

Severance pay in Trinidad and Tobago is usually only paid to workers who have been made redundant or retirees.

The minimum severance benefits payable by the employer are as follows:

• More than one year but less than five years:  A half-month pay per year of service.
• More than five years of service: Three-quarter month’s pay per year of service.

For employees who have not completed a full year of service, severance pay is calculated on a pro-rata basis.
