Employer of Record. You keep hearing about it. You’re told it can help you scale your business beyond borders with ease. But what is it? And who are the real-life businesses using it to achieve their global goals?
Well, we’re glad you asked!
Employer of Record: what is it and how does it work?
What is an Employer of Record?
An Employer of Record (EoR) is a company entrusted by client organisations to hire staff abroad on their behalf. EoRs will have local entities established in-country or will work closely with a thoroughly vetted and trusted local partner.
How does it work?
Through this entity or partner, the EoR will hire, onboard, payroll, and provide on-the-ground HR support to the client organisation’s workers, in line with all local employment laws. Meanwhile, the day-to-day management of workers and running of the company remains with the client.
What are the advantages of using an Employer of Record?
Ensure compliance
Using an EoR means leaving in-country compliance in the hands of experts. By doing so, you are reducing the risk associated with attempting to navigate complex and evolving legal landscapes.
Support your employees on the ground
An EoR will provide in-country HR support for your workers. This means that you don’t have to worry about time zone differences and your workers have 24/7 support, wherever they are.
Save time and money
Costs are consolidated and reduced through using an EoR. EoR clients are also relieved of significant administrative burden. This is due to saving the time and energy sourcing and engaging separate services.
Required services may include legal support, accountancy services, payroll services, and visa and immigration guidance. An Employer of Record provider can offer all these services in one place, therefore reducing the costs that arise from engaging multiple vendors, as well as saving you time and resources.
Supports flexibility
Organisations of all shapes and sizes use EoR. These include SMEs, NGOs, educational institutions, and large, international businesses.
EoR is ideal for companies undertaking short-term projects overseas. It also suits businesses wishing to test out a new market without the commitment of establishing a permanent entity. Universities often use EoR to support overseas research and fixed-term teaching roles.

IMAX Corporation: Diverse location scoping requires a dynamic partnership
IMAX Corporation, a Canadian film equipment and production company, was seeking a solution that would allow them to compliantly hire employees in locations as diverse as Poland, the Czech Republic, the UAE, the Philippines, India, and Mexico.
Without entities in these countries, IMAX needed a service that could facilitate hiring in full compliance with local laws. After a challenging experience with a previous provider, IMAX was in search of a professional team of experts capable of delivering a reliable and efficient service.
IMAX wanted to find a trusted partner to consolidate services and support the hiring, onboarding, payroll, and management of an international workforce.
Having previously spoken with Caroline at Mauve Group, Nancy Valla, Sr. Director, Global People Operations at IMAX, recalled Caroline’s patience and expertise and how this simplified everything.
Nancy reached out to Caroline, and using our global approach, cost-effective solutions, and streamlined processes, Mauve helped IMAX navigate the complexities, exit existing contracts efficiently, and transition smoothly into Mauve Employer of Record (EoR) contracts.
Having a dedicated point of contact for HR and employment agreements is really helpful. Caroline is truly service-oriented, demonstrating incredible patience, guidance, and support. She has become a trusted advocate for the business.
When it comes to contracts, payroll, and other Mauve departments, responsiveness and personal approach make all the difference – they’re absolutely brilliant! Mauve acts as an extension of your team, providing seamless support.
With Mauve’s rearrangements in place, we can better serve our remote locations while supporting growth in other areas, ensuring a smooth transition.
Operational efficiency is key – seamless setup and integration allow us to navigate employment effortlessly, enhancing the overall employee experience.
Now, with Mauve’s reach and expertise, IMAX can make informed decisions, enter new markets, and strengthen our strategy for future growth.

Ashoka Africa: Global social entrepreneurs meet local challenges
Ashoka, the world’s largest network of system-changing social entrepreneurs, operates in 23 Sub-Saharan African countries. When a team member in South Africa planned to leave the country, Ashoka wanted to continue its presence there – but without setting up a local legal entity.
As an NGO with limited resources and processes requiring approval from multiple stakeholders, establishing a permanent entity in South Africa was neither cost-effective nor practical.
However, hiring a new employee compliantly in-country meant navigating complex local tax and employment regulations. To overcome this challenge and remain compliant, Ashoka needed a solution that allowed them to hire legally in South Africa without the burden and costs of entity setup.
We love Mauve’s services because it has allowed us to hire a single paid staff member in South Africa without needing to have set up a legal entity.
As you can imagine, it did not make sense to manage the complexities and workload of setting up our own legal entity for the purpose of one staff member, so this opportunity with Mauve made it possible for Ashoka to increase its visibility in South Africa without going against the local laws.
– Josephine Nzerem, Regional Director at Ashoka Africa

Creo Medical: a UK company looks beyond borders
In 2023, Creo Medical, a UK-based medtech company focusing on the development and commercialisation of minimally invasive electrosurgical devices, wanted to expand into The Netherlands.
This global medtech company needed to hire professionals in the Netherlands. However, it lacked an in-country presence or payroll system. It faced the challenge of negotiating hiring professionals in a region where they had no expertise. This posed a number of issues for Creo Medical’s leaders.
Attempting to hire in a country without local expertise can pose a serious compliance risk, as employment and tax legislation differs greatly between countries. So, Creo Medical required a solution through which they could efficiently hire and pay employees in The Netherlands while remaining 100% compliant.
Since Creo Medical started partnering with Mauve Group, I have been very pleased with the service provided.
Our contacts have been responsive to any queries and the overseas payroll management has been handled efficiently.
I would recommend Mauve’s services to other organisations in need of assistance with overseas employment and payroll.
